I'd be remiss if I didn't add to my post above how financially perilous an existence freelance writing can be. That's why, whenever I write about it, I want to always always always emphasize the importance of saving for a rainy day and being smart with your finances when you work as a freelance writer, because there are LOTS of rainy days when you set out on this path. By the same token, I don't want to discourage anyone from doing something they truly love to do -- and freelance writing can be truly fun, fulfilling and just a great adventure that exposes you to people and places you'd never meet otherwise -- but just to keep reality in mind when you do it, and to save your pennies (and hopefully dollars!) as much as you can.
