Actually, Eric, it could be argued that "data" is simply a non-count noun from a descriptive grammatical viewpoint. The same way that "information" refers to something that is conceptually plural, we cannot have "two informations" or "two datas." Non-count nouns are grammatically treated as singular in Standard American English. The distinction between "data" and "datum" is one that belongs (in terms of usage) more to Latin than English.

Nice article. If you could provide a time frame telling how long you think it will take to learn some of these things, and add some additional areas of tech that would complement html and content mgmt, and maybe why it is so beneficial/necessary to someone with an English background, I would find this even more helpful. This definitely got my mind thinking though, so thank you.

A website for English majors and it says "what metadata is"? "Data" is a plural of the singular "datum". Thus, it should read "what metadata are." This is perhaps the only point of grammar that those versed in science may have over humanities people.
